This Madhubani painting by artist Ambika Devi is a vibrant exploration of the natural and celestial worlds, divided into two distinct horizontal registers that represent the sky and the waters. Originating from the Mithila region of India, Madhubani paintings are a vibrant folk art form traditionally created by women using fingers, twigs, and matchsticks to depict nature and mythology through intricate geometric patterns. In this composition, the upper section is dominated by a large, radiant Sun God (Surya), depicted with a bold yellow face, a traditional mustache, and a sacred "U" shaped tilak on the forehead. Surya is encircled by multiple decorative bands of orange, pink, and multicolored petals, radiating outward into a sky filled with swirling, multicolored waves of energy. These rhythmic lines in shades of orange, green, and blue suggest the powerful, life-giving heat and light of the sun.
The lower register depicts a serene aquatic scene, separated from the sky by a decorative floral band. Within a large semi-circular pool of turquoise water, five stylized fish are shown swimming around a central pink lotus bud. Each fish is intricately detailed with bright scales of red, orange, and yellow, and their bodies are filled with fine Kachni (line-work) that adds texture and movement. Two small birds are perched on the outer edge of this aquatic arch, further emphasizing the theme of life and nature’s abundance.
The entire composition is enclosed within a wide border of alternating pink and blue leaf motifs, which provides a sense of structural balance to the high-energy patterns within. By using the Bharni style to fill the primary figures with bold color and the Kachni style for the background patterns, Ambika Devi creates a work that feels both ancient and full of contemporary vitality.

Delivery Timeline
Ready To Ship/In Stock artworks are shipped in 3-4 days. We only accept return requests for Ready to Ship/In stock artworks placed within a week from date of delivery. However, no returns can be accepted for international deliveries.
