This chess set brings together the functional design and sculptural vocabulary of metalcraft traditions associated with Bastar. This ensemble comprises 32 solid brass pieces and a hand-crafted wooden board with pyrography artform on it.
Each chess piece is cast in brass using the traditional lost-wax process, resulting in subtly irregular surfaces, linear texturing, and elongated forms inspired from the visual language of the tribal culture of Bastar. Rather than standardized Staunton models, the kings, queens, elephants, horses, and foot soldiers appear as miniature sculptures, their stylisation emphasizing handwork and material presence.
The wooden board is decorated through pyrography, where motifs are burnt into the surface to create geometric patterning and tonal variation. Its warm, burnished finish complements the golden patina of the brass, producing a tactile contrast between metal and wood.
Balancing playability with artisanal character, the set functions both as a usable chessboard and as a collectible object, an example of how traditional casting and surface-decoration techniques can be reinterpreted within a contemporary design format.
Each of our artworks are hand painted by master artists across India. We provide a digital authentication certificate with this artwork signed by the artist which will be sent over email after 3-4 days of delivery of the artwork.

No, we currently sell artworks unframed (unless explicitly mentioned otherwise) and do not provide framing services.

Returns and Replacements
We offer replacements or repairs if your artwork arrives damaged or has a quality issue. As each artwork is handcrafted, we do not accept returns or refunds for orders received in the expected condition.
Delivery Timeline
Ready To Ship/In Stock artworks are shipped in 3-4 days. We only accept return requests for Ready to Ship/In stock artworks placed within a week from date of delivery. However, no returns can be accepted for international deliveries.
Once your order is placed, our team stays in constant communication with the artist to track the progress and ensure the quality of your order. You will receive regular updates from us throughout this process.
All MeMeraki artworks are hand-painted. In rare occasions, artist may face delays due to weather, health, prior commitments or force majeure. Our team will reach out to you with revised timelines in case of such delays. We appreciate your understanding and patience in such situations.
