This Kalamkari textile painting by Harinath N presents an elaborate floral and avian composition arranged around a branching central plant, combining stylised flowers, foliage, birds and peacocks within a richly ornamented design. Set against a warm off-white ground and framed by a deep maroon border, the composition reflects Kalamkari’s characteristic use of intricate line work, naturalistic yet highly stylised vegetal forms and a restrained palette of earthy and jewel-like colours.
Kalamkari is a traditional textile art associated particularly with Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, historically produced through hand-drawing with a kalam (bamboo or pointed pen) and the use of natural dyes. The tradition encompasses both narrative textiles depicting mythological subjects and decorative designs featuring flowers, birds, trees and other motifs. In this work, the emphasis is on ornamental nature rather than a narrative episode, with the densely patterned forms transforming the textile surface into a continuous decorative field.
At the centre, an orange-brown branching stem spreads organically across the textile, forming the structural framework of the composition. Numerous smaller branches extend from it and carry flowers, leaves and birds, creating a sense of continuous growth. Rather than depicting a botanically accurate plant, the artist combines different floral and vegetal forms into a fantastical flowering tree, allowing each branch to become a space for intricate patterning.
Two peacocks occupy the left side of the composition, their bodies extending into elaborate fan-shaped tails that dominate the lower and upper portions of the textile. Their feathers are densely filled with concentric patterns, dotted details, geometric borders and repeated ornamental forms in blue, yellow, red and green. Their elongated necks curve towards the central branches, integrating the birds into the surrounding vegetation.
Across the branches are numerous stylised birds, each rendered with elongated bodies, curved beaks, patterned wings and decorative tails. Some appear perched on branches while others are incorporated almost seamlessly into the floral growth. Their feathers are articulated through repeated lines, scalloped edges and small geometric motifs, demonstrating the fine detailing characteristic of Kalamkari drawing.
The floral vocabulary is particularly varied. Large blossoms with layered petals appear alongside smaller flowers, buds, curling leaves and elongated seed-like forms. A prominent flower near the centre resembles a stylised sunflower or lotus, with concentric layers of pink, yellow and blue petals. Other blossoms are composed of tightly packed geometric petals and curling forms, creating a rhythmic alternation between large focal flowers and smaller botanical details.
The colour palette combines terracotta orange, mustard yellow, muted blue, turquoise, green, pink and brown, all set against the pale textile ground. Fine dark outlines define almost every figure and motif, giving clarity to the densely populated composition. The use of colour within individual petals, feathers and leaves further enhances the ornamental quality without disrupting the overall unity of the design.
The background remains largely unpainted, allowing the intricate vegetal forms to stand out clearly. This open ground is contrasted by the continuous maroon border, which encloses the composition and provides a strong visual edge to the textile. The border also emphasises the distinction between the carefully ordered decorative field and the surrounding fabric.
Through its combination of branching vegetation, fantastical flowers and richly patterned birds and peacocks, the textile celebrates the natural world through the decorative language of Kalamkari. The repeated motifs, intricate line work and flowing arrangement of branches create a sense of movement across the fabric, while the symmetrical balance of the peacocks and the central flowering structure give the composition a carefully ordered yet organic character.

Returns and Replacements
We offer replacements or repairs if your artwork arrives damaged or has a quality issue. As each artwork is handcrafted, we do not accept returns or refunds for orders received in the expected condition.
Delivery Timeline

Kalamkari is an ancient Indian art form of painting or printing on fabric using natural dyes and intricate penwork, with its name literally meaning 'craftwork done with a pen'. Flourishing under the Mughals and later the Golconda and Coromandel Sultanates, its prominent centers are Srikalahasti and Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh. This art form traditionally depicts Hindu mythological epics like Mahabharata and Ramayana, featuring deities and common occurrences, characterized by rounded faces, large eyes, and detailed costumes. Legend connects its origin to Radha teaching the art in Machilipatnam and its use on Hanuman's flag. The meticulous technique involves preparing cotton or silk fabric, outlining designs with a 'kalam' (bamboo or palm stick dipped in fermented jaggery and water) acting as a natural mordant, and then filling in patterns with natural dyes from plants, roots, and minerals. Authentic Kalamkari is identified by hand-drawn or block-printed designs, natural dyes, traditional patterns, and slight imperfections, with motifs often inspired by nature, mythology, and folklore, each carrying cultural and symbolic significance. Harinath N, Sudheerji, and Siva Reddy are notable master artists of this intricate and time-consuming art.
