This Mata Ni Pachedi painting by Vasant Manubhai Chittara is a magnificent portrayal of Nritya Ganesha, the dancing form of the elephant-headed deity who is the remover of obstacles and the lord of new beginnings. In this traditional temple cloth, Ganesha is depicted in a moment of divine ecstasy, his movement symbolizing the rhythmic pulse of the universe and the joy of spiritual liberation.
The central figure of Ganesha is rendered with eight arms, each extending in a dynamic, fan-like arrangement that suggests the fluid motion of his dance. His body is left in the natural cream of the hand-loomed cotton, allowing the intricate black pen-work (kalam) to stand out against the deep, madder-dyed red background. He holds a variety of sacred attributes, including the parashu (axe), trishula (trident), tusk, pasha (noose), ladoo, etc. while his lower trunk curls playfully toward a treat. His garments and jewelry are masterpieces of the Mata ni Pachedi tradition, filled with microscopic geometric patterns, fine stippling, and cross-hatching that give the figure a sense of vibrating "shakti" or divine energy.
At the feet of the dancing deity sits his faithful vahana (mount), the Mooshika (mouse), looking up in adoration. The mouse is similarly detailed with rhythmic linework, symbolizing the ability of the divine to control even the smallest and most erratic desires. Vasant Manubhai Chittara’s precision in the use of natural dyes and the bamboo pen transforms this ritual textile into a living celebration of rhythm, grace, and auspiciousness.

Delivery Timeline

Mata ni Pachedi is a traditional folk art form from Gujarat, India, created by the nomadic Vaghari community, known for its vibrant depictions of Hindu goddesses, particularly the mother goddess, Mata. Literally translating to "behind the goddess," these artworks were traditionally used as backdrops in shrines, evolving from portable shrines created by the marginalized Vaghari community who were denied temple entry. Characterized by bold, dynamic compositions with the goddess at the center, surrounded by devotees and symbolic animals, the art uses an earthy palette of black, red, and white, symbolizing protection, strength, and purity, respectively. It is traditionally created on cotton cloth using natural dyes, with outlines drawn using a bamboo stick dipped in black dye made from jaggery and iron, and colors filled in from natural sources like turmeric and indigo.
