About the Artwork +
This magnificent antique Tanjore painting captures the divine romance of Radha and Krishna seated upon a grand, golden Jhoola (swing), rendered with the hallmark jewel-like opulence of this style. Tanjore (Thanjavur) Painting is a classical South Indian art form known for its elaborate composition, vibrant colors, iconic relief work and extensive use of gold leaf and semi-precious stones set in a wooden frame, primarily depicting Hindu deities.
Executed in the traditional Tanjore style, the work is set against a deep, luminous prussian blue background that heightens the brilliance of the gold ornamentation and the jewel-like colors of the figures. Rendered with a serene blue complexion, Krishna is shown in his classic shringar. He wears a mor mukut (peacock feather crown) and holds his bansuri (flute). He is draped in a bright pitambar dhoti (yellow silk), with a garland adorning his neck.
Radha wears a rich red sari that provides a striking visual contrast to Krishna's yellow attire. In a gesture of intimate devotion, he leans toward him, her arms draped around his shoulder as she looks down and away from him.
The golden jewelry of both is meticulously studded with vibrant red stones. The swing itself is decorated with green stones. The couple is enshrined within a majestic golden archway (Prabhavali). This arch is decorated with curtain-like drapes at the top, in deep greens and reds with gold borders. At the base of the scene, there is a traditional golden pedestal upon which rests a plate filled with bananas and coconuts. This detail serves as an essential element of seva (devotional service).
The antique character of this piece is evident in the mellowed tone of the gold and the delicate, hand-painted facial features. The heavy use of gold leaf on the drapes, swing chains and pillars gives the artwork an opulent, regal finish.
