This powerful painting is a profound and intricate example of Mata Ni Pachedi, a traditional religious art form from Gujarat. The piece, by the acclaimed eighth-generation artist Vasant Manubhai Chitara, depicts a powerful and dynamic "Dancing Buffaloes."
Mata Ni Pachedi, literally meaning "behind the mother goddess," emerged as a means of worship for the Vaghri community, who were traditionally barred from entering temples. The art form involves hand-painting cloths with natural dyes and is known for its bold outlines, vivid colors, and rhythmic repetition of motifs.
In this specific artwork, the buffaloes are the central and dominant figure, rendered in a dynamic pose that suggests a sense of movement and energy. There are two buffaloes, the red one with a depiction of Bahuchara Mata on it with her cock mount, with all devotees going to visit her temple, to fulfil their mannats or wishes, playing shehnais, with the depictions continuing in the blue one, set against a black background, framed by a simple yellow border. The buffalo is a sacred animal, often a vehicle for goddesses such as Visat Mata.
As is characteristic of this art form, the buffaloes' bodies are a canvas for intricate patterns, filled with a multitude of smaller figures, including devotees and other animals, creating a complex and vibrant visual narrative. The painting is a testament to the artist’s mastery and his family's three-century-long legacy of preserving this unique craft.

Mata ni Pachedi is a traditional folk art form from Gujarat, India, created by the nomadic Vaghari community, known for its vibrant depictions of Hindu goddesses, particularly the mother goddess, Mata. Literally translating to "behind the goddess," these artworks were traditionally used as backdrops in shrines, evolving from portable shrines created by the marginalized Vaghari community who were denied temple entry.
