This vibrant Madhubani painting by artist Ambika Devi captures a poignant moment between Lord Rama and Sita, the central figures of the Hindu epic, the Ramayana. Lord Rama is depicted on the left with his traditional blue-grey complexion, carrying his iconic bow slung over his shoulder. He gazes tenderly at Sita, who stands to the right, adorned in a rich red dupatta decorated with white floral motifs. Together, they hold a long, ceremonial garland—representing the Swayamvara, their divine wedding—rendered with bold stripes of green, yellow, and red.
The composition is deeply rooted in the Bharni style, characterized by the use of vibrant, solid colors to fill the figures' garments. Both Rama and Sita are distinguished by large, radiant yellow halos encircled by pink lotus petals, signifying their divine status. The background is equally detailed, featuring a lush green canopy of leaves that shelters the couple, while the ground is depicted as a rhythmic blue and red checkerboard pattern, a common geometric element in Mithila art used to fill negative space.
The entire vertical work is framed by a sophisticated triple border. An inner band of fine black lines is followed by a middle border of repeating red and blue triangular petals, and finally a solid black outer margin. By using delicate Kachni (line-work) to detail the pleats of Sita’s skirt and the intricate patterns on their jewelry, Ambika Devi creates a visual celebration of devotion, duty, and the eternal bond of the divine couple.

Returns and Replacements

Delivery Timeline
Ready To Ship/In Stock artworks are shipped in 3-4 days. We only accept return requests for Ready to Ship/In stock artworks placed within a week from date of delivery. However, no returns can be accepted for international deliveries.

Madhubani art, also known as Mithila art, originates from the Mithila region of Bihar, India, and is celebrated for its intricate patterns, vibrant colors, and profound cultural significance. Traditionally created by women on walls and floors during auspicious occasions, these paintings depict Hindu mythology, nature, folklore, and daily life, often incorporating Hindu deities, scenes from epics, and natural motifs like flowers and animals. Legend suggests its origins trace back to King Janak's commission for Sita's wedding. Artists traditionally use natural pigments from plants and minerals, applied with homemade bamboo and cotton brushes, filling the entire surface with fine detail. While some contemporary artists use synthetic paints, many maintain traditional methods. The art form gained international recognition in the 1960s and has since expanded to various mediums beyond walls, including canvases and textiles.
