This beautiful vertical folio miniature by Mohan Prajapati explores high-contrast biological symmetry, setting a pair of multi-colored hummingbirds against a pristine, gold-leaf sky.
Mughal miniature paintings are intricate, highly detailed artworks that flourished in India between the 16th and 19th centuries. This courtly art form uniquely blends bold Indian colors, delicate Persian lines, and European shading, capturing a vivid record of the Mughal era.
At the center of the panel are two long-billed hummingbirds perched on a slender twig alongside a vertical shoot of wild banana leaves (Musa), complete with a budding green inflorescence at its base. The upper bird is rendered with a pristine white belly and dark green wings, while the lower bird features a striking, iridescent green breast, a deep magenta crown, and an extraordinarily long, split fork-tail that creates a powerful graphic line against the gold background.
The inner illumination is encased within a fine, repeating golden scrollwork border, which explodes outward into a wide, sand-colored margin filled with symmetrical columns of hand-drawn flora. Dozens of botanical stems, featuring blooming pink carnations, white poppies, and yellow morning glories, rise elegantly around the frame, each petal detailed with fine-line shading.
The entire composition is grounded by a thick, charcoal-black outer frame, presenting an exhibition-grade masterpiece that highlights the harmonious relationship between wildlife and imperial decoration.

Miniature painting, an exquisite Indian art form, originated from a striking fusion of ancient Indian styles and the Persian Safavid school, giving birth to the Mughal School. Characterized by gracious strokes and intricate detailing achieved with single-haired brushes, these paintings served as a primary mode of historical archiving under Mughal emperors like Akbar and Jahangir, capturing courtly scenes, wars, mythological tales, and more. The vibrancy of these works was created using natural colors derived from indigo, precious stones, shells, pearls, and real gold and silver, with details so fine they often require a magnifying glass to appreciate. Though the art form saw a decline in patronage towards the end of the 18th century, traditional skills continue to be passed down, with Rajasthan particularly upholding the artistic legacy of Mughal miniature paintings.
