This Tanjore painting by Sanjay Tandekar is a vivid portrayal of Gajalakshmi, the aspect of Goddess Lakshmi who symbolizes prosperity, abundance and royal power. The Goddess is depicted seated in Padmasana (lotus pose) upon a blooming lotus, flanked by two white elephants, who honor her by holding lotus buds in their trunks. She holds lotus buds in two hands, with the lower right hand in the abhaya mudra, symbolising protection and fearlessness and left in the varada mudra, symbolsing giving boons or blessings. This central imagery, deeply rooted in symbolism, transforms the canvas into a sacred space of auspiciousness and divine grace.

Tandekar’s mastery of the Thanjavur tradition is evident in the opulent use of 22-karat gold foil, which brilliantly coats the Goddess's intricate jewelry, her majestic crown, and the scalloped architectural canopy above her. A defining feature of this work is the meticulous gesso relief, where a mixture of french chalk powder and arabic gum is used to create a raised, three-dimensional texture beneath the gold. This technique adds a physical weight and jewel-like quality to the ornamentation, further enhanced by the traditional embedding of red and green stones throughout the throne and the ornate border. The sharp contrast between the radiant golden figure and the deep, solid background ensures that the Goddess remains the singular, luminous focus of the composition. Through this balance of heavy relief work and vibrant mineral colors, the artist creates a piece that serves as both a powerful devotional icon and a sophisticated example of South Indian royal art.

Domestic Orders

All prices are inclusive of GST and applicable Indian taxes.

• We offer free shipping on orders above ₹1999 for all artworks, except Lippan, Terracotta and Thikri.
• A flat shipping rate of ₹499 applies to orders below ₹1999.

Lippan, Terracotta and Thikri

Shipping is charged on a per-kilogram basis, due to the delicate and bulky nature of these items.

International Orders

• A flat shipping charge of ₹4,000 applies to international artwork orders.
• Customs duties, taxes, or import charges in the buyer’s country are not included and must be borne by the buyer.
• Shipping rates for Lippan, Terracotta and Thikri artworks will be calculated based on weight.

Extra charges may be applicable for both domestic and international deliveries in the following cases:

• If the article requires additional packaging (such as a wooden crate) to ensure safe shipping due to its delicate nature.
• Custom-framed artworks.
• Artworks where shorter side exceeds 36 inches or Decor items with any side over 35 inches.
