This square Soof piece by Daya Ben depicts a multi-layered mandala layout through cross-stitch embroidery. Soof Embroidery is a traditional counted-thread embroidery practiced by women of the Meghwal community in the Kutch region of Gujarat. It is created by counting the weave of the fabric rather than drawing patterns, resulting in precise geometric designs. The embroidery is usually worked with silk threads on handwoven cotton fabric, often without any mirrors. Soof motifs are inspired by nature, including flowers, buds and abstract forms.
The composition features a square-shaped, vibrant medallion. The core is a dense cluster of interlocking cross-stitches rendered in rich orange and deep green threads, forming a small cross-like star. Branching outward diagonally from this nexus are four prominent, identical tree-like motifs that stretch toward the outer corners. These branching elements are intricately patterned with mustard yellow and navy filaments.
The surrounding border elements enclose the central layout, leaning beautifully into the square frame with multiple concentric tracks of precise needlework. The framing sequence begins with an inner dashed line of clean white stitches, followed by a dense checkerboard matrix of alternating orange and black blocks. The outermost perimeter is defined by a heavy, multi-colored braided track of green and yellow running lines.
The textile features the school's signature absolute precision, using tight, uniform cross-stitch cells to give the flat fabric a volumetric presence. The color palette relies on a striking contrast between the rich orange, mustard yellow and deep green threads against the vibrant magenta ground. This piece beautifully blends key features of the Soof style with cross-stitch embroidery.
