About the Artwork +
This exuberant embroidered piece by Gudiya Devi reflects the folk tradition of the region and preserving this traditional craft.
Sujani embroidery is a prominent craft from the state of Bihar, derived from the words "sui", meaning needle, and "jani" meaning birth. Literally, it signifies an embroidery brought to life by the needle. Traditionally, women in Bihar created quilts and soft blankets for babies, utilising recycled old cotton saris and dhotis.
In this textile piece, there is a beautiful depiction of the marriage of Lord Rama and Goddess Sita. The auspicious scene is elegantly framed by an arch-like structure that evokes the grandeur of a palace. It captures the moment when Sita is about to accept Rama as her husband during the garland ceremony. Both figures face each other, embodying a sense of motion in their gestures, signalling their acceptance of this sacred bond. Sita is adorned as a newlywed bride, showcasing intricate bangles, embellished clothes and ornately designed ornaments including a mangatikka on her forehead, a nath, dangling earrings, necklaces and payal. In contrast, Lord Rama is depicted with a bare upper body, an angavastram draped elegantly over his shoulders with a dhoti. His crown signifies his royal heritage as the prince of Ayodhya and he carries a bow on his right shoulder.
The threads are stitched in vibrant colours, creating a lively scene. Vertical stitches add texture, with the couple standing on a meticulously crafted checkered floor made up of different thread work. At the centre of the arch, a jhoomar-like structure is placed, with flowers being showered on the couple. The imagery of the couple and the scene is stylised with a frontal body posture, and the piece of cloth features a deep red background, enhancing the richness and vibrancy of the artwork.
