This one of a kind Cheriyal mask by Sai Kiran belongs to Telangana’s vibrant storytelling tradition, made with Tamarind seed paste, cloth and paper and painted with bold outlines so expressions read clearly from a distance during performance.
This mask shows a light blue face with round, startled eyes and a wide, toothy grin. Two dark horns rise from the head, while the small ears and simple yellow mark on the forehead add to its playful, almost comic look. The uneven teeth and stretched smile make the character feel lively rather than frightening, as if caught mid-laugh.Its wide, unflinching eyes and exaggerated features echo the kolli kannu of Drishti paintings, where seeing and being seen becomes a quiet act of protection. Like the guardian faces once painted on Tamil Nadu’s walls, this mask turns bold imagery into a watchful presence that marks space and absorbs unseen harm.
In a story, this figure becomes the Mischievous Watcher, a spirit who appears when people take themselves too seriously. He pops up during quarrels, festivals and serious meetings, grinning so widely that everyone is forced to laugh. The elders say he reminds the village that not every problem needs anger; sometimes, a little mischief is enough to restore balance.
