About the Artwork +
This Kalighat painting by Uttam Chitrakar is a tender depiction of maternal love, showcasing Goddess Durga lovingly embracing a baby Ganesha. Originating as a folk tradition in the 19th century near the Kalighat Temple in Kolkata, West Bengal, this style of art is celebrated for its ability to reframe grand, cosmic deities into deeply human, relatable familial settings, using fluid contours and sweeping brushwork to convey profound emotional warmth.
At the center of this touching composition is Goddess Durga, represented in her multi-armed form but completely softened by maternal affection. Her face is turned lovingly toward her child, featuring the classic Kalighat almond-shaped eyes, a prominent nose ring, and a stylized crown (mukut). She is draped in a beautiful blue sari, heavily ornamented with white circular and spiral motifs that cascade down the canvas. Instead of wielding weapons of war, her ten arms fan out gently behind her like a divine sunburst, cradling and framing her young son.
Baby Ganesha is nestled securely on his mother's left lap, looking up into her face with a sweet, affectionate gaze. The infant deity is shown with his characteristic elephant head and trunk, his soft pink skin decorated with white cross-hatched necklaces, armlets and anklets. Behind the mother and child’s heads rests a shared halo with a flame-like mane that visually anchors their divine bond.
The painting features the Kalighat school’s signature economy of line, using bold, continuous strokes to define the volume of the skirt and delicate white linework to create the intricate lace-like jewelry. The color palette is striking yet balanced, relying on the contrast between the cool, rhythmic blue of the water and the radiant, warm pinks and golds of the divine mother and child. This work beautifully captures the Vatsalya rasa (parental love), merging the supreme majesty of the Devi with the tender, structured grace of everyday family life.
