This Kalighat painting by Uttam Chitrakar is a powerful depiction of Mahishasuramardini, the epic saga of the buffalo demon Mahishasura's demise at the hands of the formidable Goddess Durga.
Kalighat painting, originating in 19th-century Kolkata, West Bengal, is distinguished by vivid hues and strong contours. Initially portraying deities and myths, it evolved to encompass diverse themes. This unique Indian art form captures attention with its vibrant colors and bold outlines, reflecting the cultural richness of its origins.
The center of this piece portrays Goddess Durga, shown in her formidable multi-armed form as the destroyer of evil. She is dressed in an elegant sari, featuring the traditional elongated eyes and a sharp, disciplined profile. Adorned with intricate pearl jewelry and a golden crown, the goddess wields a Trishula (trident), symbolizing the triumph of righteousness over darkness.
In the lower half of the painting to the right, Mahishasura is depicted in a deep blue hue, his face etched with a defeated expression. To the left, Durga’s vahana (vehicle), a lion pounces upon the demon, its jaws open in a display of raw power. The interaction between the three figures creates a triangular tension that highlights the moment of spiritual victory.
The painting utilises broad, sweeping strokes and rhythmic shading to create a sense of three-dimensional volume. The color palette is striking yet balanced, relying on the contrast between the divine warmth of the Goddess and the cool, dark tones of the asura. Kalighat painting is a traditional Indian art form that originated in the 19th century near the Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata. It is known for its bold lines, vibrant colors, and minimal backgrounds, influencing artists like Jamini Roy. Initially devotional souvenirs for pilgrims, the themes expanded to include social satires, depicting figures like Goddess Kali, Babu & Bibi, and Cat with the Fish. Artists, known as 'patuas,' used natural pigments on paper or cloth, sometimes incorporating European realism for British patrons. Although it declined with the rise of machine prints, recent efforts by artists, government, and connoisseurs are reviving this culturally and historically significant art form through exhibitions and workshops.
