About the Artwork +
This Kalighat painting by Uttam Chitrakar is an enchanting night-time depiction of Radha and Krishna. Originating near the Kalighat Temple in Kolkata, West Bengal, this school of painting is celebrated for its ability to condense complex, epic narratives into highly expressive, visually striking compositions utilizing fluid brushwork and rich, saturated pigments.
At the center of this intimate, devotional piece are the divine lovers, resting on the banks of the sacred Yamuna River. Radha is shown seated gracefully on Krishna’s lap, her arms wrapped affectionately around his neck. Krishna, rendered in his iconic deep blue skin tone with a white tilak gracing his forehead, gazes lovingly down at her while triumphantly raising his flute in his left hand. Both figures are adorned in elaborate traditional attire, with Radha in a sprawling, multi-pleated red ghagra dotted with pearl-like motifs, and Krishna wrapped in a finely patterned Pitambar (yellow dhoti).
The scene is enriched by the surrounding fauna of Vrindavan, all drawn in states of quiet reverence. To the left, two sacred cows peek out from behind the couple, their large, almond-shaped eyes fixed on the divine pair. To the right stand two stylized peacocks, their bodies decorated with dense white stippling.
Below the throne-like seat of the lovers, the waters of the Yamuna are filled with patterned waves and a series of dark lotus pads and pink buds, symbolizing spiritual purity. Glowing yellow dots in the background beautifully illuminate the secret woodland scene and cast a celestial glow over the couple.
The painting features the Kalighat school’s signature economy of line, utilizing broad, sweeping strokes to define the dramatic flair of Radha's skirt and fine white line-work to texture their silver ornaments. The color palette is striking yet balanced, relying on the contrast between the deep, nocturnal greens and blues of nature and the vibrant, warm tone of the garments. This work beautifully captures the Bhakti philosophy, merging the serene mystery of the forest at night with the rhythmic, structured grace of divine love.
