About the Artwork +

In this exquisite Kalamkari painting by Harinath Ji, we witness the majestic Matsya Avatar, the Fish Incarnation, of Lord Vishnu. The painting beautifully captures the essence of this divine form. Lord Matsya is portrayed as a magnificent figure with the upper torso of a man and the lower body of a fish. Adorned with four arms, he holds the khartaal, a shankha (conch shell), a gada (mace), and a lotus, symbolizing his divine attributes.

The artwork depicts a significant event from Hindu mythology, where Lord Vishnu in his Matsya Avatar reveals to Manu, the first man, about the impending destruction of the world. Vishnu, in his compassionate nature, guides Manu to gather all the creatures of the world and secure them on a boat specially constructed by the gods. As the cataclysmic deluge approaches, Lord Vishnu manifests as a grand fish with a prominent horn. Manu ties the boat carrying the seven sages to the horn of the divine fish, ensuring their safety and preservation.

Within the painting, we witness Lord Indra and Lord Brahma humbly paying their respects to Lord Vishnu in his Matsya form. Their presence signifies the reverence and recognition of the supreme divinity manifested in Matsya Avatar. Additionally, the artwork captures the powerful scene of Lord Matsya triumphantly slaying the demon Hayagriva, who seeks refuge within a conch shell.

Harinath Ji's artistic mastery shines through in this Kalamkari painting, depicting the intricate details and vibrant colors that bring the Matsya Avatar to life. The artwork serves as a visual ode to the divine incarnation of Lord Vishnu, showcasing his benevolence, protection, and ability to preserve life in times of turmoil.

Kalamkari

Kalamkari refers to the ancient style of hand painting done with a tamarind pen, using natural dyes. The name Kalamkari originates from Persian words qalam (pen) and kari (craftsmanship). Paintings made on fabric and fabric scrolls are mentioned in ancient Hindu, Buddhist and Jain literature. Under medieval Islamic rule, the term Kalamkari was derived from the words "kalam", which means "pen" in Telugu, and "kari", which means craftmanship. This became popular under the patronage of the Golconda sultanate. Motifs drawn in this ancient art of Kalamkari, include flowers, peacock, paisleys and also divine characters from Ramayana and Mahabharata. Kalamkari colours are made mostly from vegetable dyes. The popularity of this exquisite form of painting has earned international repute for the state of Andhra Pradesh. Kalamkari art was the household occupation of several rural women and craftsmen in the ancient times and continues to be passed down from one generation to the next. Artforms like Kalamkari have started gaining more and more popularity in recent times because of their no-chemical process of creating printed textiles.
