About the Artwork +

Shehzaad Ali Sherani's Pichwai painting unfolds a vibrant tableau of a bygone era, where the essence of historical charm comes alive. The canvas is adorned with meticulous details, showcasing peacocks gracefully meandering around a traditional van beneath the expansive canopy of ancient trees. Monkeys playfully frolic on the branches, adding an animated touch to this captivating scene. Shehzaad Ji's intricate brushwork captures the spirit of the olden times, breathing life into the Pichwai narrative.
The process of creating this Pichwai masterpiece involves a blend of artistry and tradition. Sherani employs a nuanced approach, utilizing finely ground natural pigments and brushes crafted from squirrel hair. The elaborate detailing of peacocks, the van, and the lively monkeys is achieved through skillful hand-painting and the careful application of gold leaf embellishments. This traditional art form, rooted in the heritage of Nathdwara in Rajasthan, reflects not only the visual richness of historical scenes but also pays homage to the meticulous craftsmanship of the artist, creating a visual tapestry that resonates with the cultural legacy of Pichwai painting.

Pichwai Art

The art of Pichwai originated over 400 years ago, illustrating tales of Shrinathji, an incarnation of Krishna, the deity manifest as a seven-year-old child. Prominent in th Nathadwara region of Rajasthan especially in the Vaishnavite sect, the paintings are hand-painted on cloth or paper and depict different scenes and stills - lotuses, Radha, Gopis and cows are also frequent subjects. What started as a religious practice, is an art today and finds place in the form of paintings and wall hangings in homes of many art connoisseurs.
