About the Artwork +
This exquisite leather puppet by Rajeev Pulavar brings to life the character of Vidushaka, a clown and comic figure in traditional Indian performance arts, particularly in Kathakali and Koodiyattam. Vidushaka is typically portrayed as a humorous, yet insightful companion to the hero, and Pulavar’s depiction captures this blend of wit and wisdom. The puppet's design reflects his jovial nature, with exaggerated facial features—particularly the broad, toothy grin and large nose that add to his comedic appearance. He is dressed in a costume adorned with delicate white and red patterns that stand out against the brownish, earth-toned leather body, emphasizing meticulous craftsmanship. The puppet's limbs, especially the slightly bent knees and raised hand holding a staff, evoke a sense of animated readiness, as if Vidushaka is about to perform an act or deliver a punchline. His headgear, elaborately detailed with perforations, adds a touch of grandeur to his otherwise playful demeanor, indicating his integral role in traditional performances. The dotted patterns that trace the outlines of his form create a vibrant texture, enhancing the visual storytelling in shadow play. Vidushaka, though a comic figure, often conveys deeper truths through humor, and this puppet skillfully encapsulates both his entertaining and philosophical sides. Rajeev Pulavar’s craftsmanship preserves the cultural heritage of Kerala's shadow puppetry while ensuring that characters like Vidushaka remain timeless and engaging for modern audiences.
