This intimate and quietly humorous Kalighat painting by Uttam Chitrakar depicts a Bengali woman, fisherwoman, at ease in the domestic sphere, pausing her morning grooming to glance at a hand mirror, with raw fish laid out before her and a watchful cat at her side, a scene of ordinary household life rendered with the fluid confidence and sharp economy of the Kalighat style.
Kalighat painting is a distinctive folk art tradition that originated in 19th-century Kolkata near the Kalighat Kali Temple, initially produced by patua (scroll painter) families for pilgrims and temple visitors. Characterised by bold, calligraphic brushstrokes, flat unmodulated colour washes, and emphatic black contours, it evolved from devotional imagery into one of India's most immediately recognisable and culturally resonant folk art forms.
The woman is seated on the floor in a relaxed posture, her legs folded beneath her, dressed in a pale sky-blue blouse and a flowing blue lower garment. Her golden-yellow complexion, large almond eyes, and composed expression are rendered in the characteristic Kalighat manner, the face viewed in three-quarter profile with simplified, expressive features. She holds a small rectangular hand mirror up with her right hand, examining her reflection, while her left hand is raised to her hair or face in a grooming gesture.
Placed on a low dark platform before her are several raw fish rendered in pale pink and silver, their scaled bodies rendered with clean, curved lines, an unmistakably Bengali domestic detail, and a recurring Kalighat motif that roots the goddess-like figure firmly in everyday life. To her left sits a black-and-white patterned cat, rendered with the same flat, bold technique, its large eyes fixed on the fish with barely contained interest. A decorative blue curtain with bold black stripe detailing frames the upper left corner, adding a suggestion of an indoor setting.
