About the Artwork +
This evocative set of three framed panels in applique embroidery by Suman Jangid, a traditional craft in which cut pieces of cloth are sewn onto a base fabric to build a composition. Read side by side, the three panels join into a single continuous landscape of ridges, valleys and sky.
Applique has been practiced across India for centuries, in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Odisha and many other regions, and its essence is the layering of fabric rather than the drawing of a line. Each shape is cut, placed and stitched down by hand, so the artist paints with cloth, choosing every pattern and colour from the fabric itself. Here the artist works with resist-dyed cloths with tied parts, which carry their own markings of rings, stripes and zigzags before a single stitch is made.
The landscape rises from left to right across the three panels. In the left panel, a tall mountain peak climbs toward the centre, its face covered in indigo and cream vertical markings and its shadowed flank in deep purple-blue, with fine rows of stitching running across it. Below, hills in olive, terracotta and maroon descend in overlapping layers. In the middle panel, the ridge continues with a second peak in indigo and cream on the right, while terracotta hills crossed by bold white zigzags and olive slopes marked with circular rings fill the foreground. The right panel carries the range onward with smaller peaks, stepped hills and a zigzag-patterned terracotta valley. Across all three, a band of mustard ochre crowns the sky above an expanse of plain cream.
The palette is earthy and grounded. Indigo, terracotta, olive and ochre are held together by the cream of the open sky, and the resist-dyed patterns give each hill its own texture, as though every slope had its own weather. Rows of fine stitching mark the shaded folds of the hills, which adds a gentle, handmade rhythm to the surface.
Each panel is mounted in a dark wooden frame, and together the three form a single panoramic view.
