About the Artwork +
This exquisite Phad painting by Abhishek Joshi depicts the divine presence of Ganesha, the lord who removes all obstacles from one’s life, with a contemporary outlook.
Phad painting is a folk art form from of Rajasthan, India. The word ‘Phad’ refers to a long painted cloth or a scroll, which narrates the story through a series of painted images. This narrative painting is carried by a Bhopa (a storyteller) who would sing and narrate the story depicted on the scroll. Traditionally, these Phad paintings were created to narrate the depiction of local folk deities and heroic figures of Rajasthan.
The composition depicts the magnificent head of Lord Ganesha, placed at the center of the cloth canvas. Adorned with a crown, the facial features include fish-shaped eyes, a curving trunk, and an adorned tusk, illuminated with milky white, and a huge ear that ends with a scroll-like finish, captivating his divine grace and filling the room with energy and grace. From his tusk, a pair of fragile flowers dangle. His forehead is adorned with a tilak and a gold-embellished motif band in a vertical manner. His neck is adorned with a necklace, highly gold-embellished, defining his royalty. Painted in the unconventional colours of blue, orange, violet, and green, it conveys the contemporary style of the artwork. The face is further painted with intricate floral patterns contrasting with deep blue colour. Other elements like the crown and ears are filled with various geometric motifs. His head is set against a long Sanskrit manuscript with the Sankata Nashaka Ganesha Stotra, reflecting the spirituality and devotional essence.
To the upper right side of Ganesha’s head, two ladies are painted in a miniaturistic view, in kneeling positions and facing Ganesha. They are attired in traditional Rajasthan clothing, decked up with ornaments and holding a diya, symbolizing the reverence and respect towards the deity.
The backdrop is painted ochre, with maroon outlines of painted figures, depicting Ganesha's wedding to his consorts Riddhi and Siddhi. Here, ganesha is depicted in a four-armed form, holding a trishula and padma in his hand, as he circumambulates the holy fire altar with his consorts, with a priest chanting mantras. Divine witnesses to the scene include his parents, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati along with the four-headed creator god, Brahma and Indra, the king of gods, seated on his elephant, Airavata. His vahana, the mushaka, is depicted to the left, standing out amonst the other figures and elements of the backdrop, including musicians, animals, botanical elements, etc.
