About the Artwork +

This recreation of the Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham movie poster by Mohan Prajapati is a brilliant continuation of his series merging Bollywood icons with the refined language of Mughal miniature painting. By casting the Raichand family in the roles of a royal court, the artist highlights the film’s themes of lineage, tradition, and "loving your parents" through a lens of historical grandeur. The central composition features the film’s main ensemble reimagined as Mughal nobility. Amitabh Bachchan’s Yash Raichand is positioned centrally and slightly higher than the others, his turban and dignified expression reflecting the role of an emperor. Surrounding him are the other protagonists, each rendered with the delicate profile views and expressive, almond-shaped eyes characteristic of the Mughal style.

The garments are a highlight of this fusion; the saris and tunics are detailed with fine gold thread work (zari) and rhythmic patterns that bridge the gap between Manish Malhotra’s 2001 film costumes and 17th-century courtly fashion. The muted teal background allows the vibrant oranges, purples, and golds of the figures to stand out, creating a sense of formal elegance. True to the film’s narrative, the painting includes elements that reference specific moments of the story: In the bottom left, a female figure is shown playing a tambourine or daf, a clever nod to the high-energy musical sequences like "Say Shava Shava." On the bottom right, two male figures are shown in an embrace, likely representing the emotional reunion between the two brothers, Rohan and Rahul. This placement in the foreground suggests that while the upper section represents the rigid "parampara" (tradition) of the family, the lower section captures the emotional resolution of the film. The title "Khushi Kabhie Gham" is integrated into the center-bottom of the main panel, written in a stylized script that matches the artistic tone of the piece. The entire scene is enclosed within a spectacular ornate border. The golden-yellow field is decorated with flowing floral arabesques, pink lotus-like blossoms, and blue highlights. This border is not merely decorative; in miniature traditions, it signifies the sacred or royal nature of the subject matter, elevating the film’s family drama to the status of a legendary chronicle.

22k gold leafing.

Mohan Prajapati

Mohan Prajapati
Mohan Prajapati, a Jaipur-based artist, began painting at the age of ten, learning miniature art from his father alongside his brother. With 40 years of experience, he has mastered various miniature art genres, including Mughal and Kangra, and has been particularly recognized for his Mughal miniature work. His art has been exhibited internationally in New York, China, and Bahrain, as well as in local venues. Prajapati's significant achievements include receiving the state award in 2004 and the national award in 2007.

Miniature Paintings

Miniature painting, an exquisite Indian art form, originated from a striking fusion of ancient Indian styles and the Persian Safavid school, giving birth to the Mughal School. Characterized by gracious strokes and intricate detailing achieved with single-haired brushes, these paintings served as a primary mode of historical archiving under Mughal emperors like Akbar and Jahangir, capturing courtly scenes, wars, mythological tales, and more. The vibrancy of these works was created using natural colors derived from indigo, precious stones, shells, pearls, and real gold and silver, with details so fine they often require a magnifying glass to appreciate. Though the art form saw a decline in patronage towards the end of the 18th century, traditional skills continue to be passed down, with Rajasthan particularly upholding the artistic legacy of Mughal miniature paintings.
