About the Artwork +
"This Mata ni Pachedi painting by Vasant Manubhai Chittara depicts Meldi Mata, a powerful and fierce protective deity prominently worshipped in the folklore and rural traditions of Gujarat. While she shares architectural similarities with other goddesses in the Vaghari tradition, she is distinctly identified by her sacred vahana, the goat, and her unique origin story rooted in the victory of purity over corruption. Known as the goddess of graveyards and closely associated with the mastery of black magic, Meldi Mata serves as a guardian of the marginalized and a granter of swift justice.
The origin of Meldi Mata is linked to the story of the demon Amarya Dait. In an attempt to escape the wrath of Visat Mata, the demon hid inside the carcass of a bull. Because Visat Mata represented absolute purity, she could not enter the remains of the animal to finish the task. Instead, she created a new power from the mel, or dirt, of her own hands, giving life to Meldi Mata. Visat Mata then instructed her to learn the arts of black magic to ensure the demon could be reached and defeated. It is from this ""mel"" and her mastery over dark forces that she derived her name, Meldi, signifying her role as a deity who operates in the shadows to maintain divine order.
In this meticulous rendering, Meldi Mata is shown seated regally upon her goat, which is filled with dense, rhythmic patterns of dots and scales that represent the vibrating life-force of the creature. The Goddess is four-armed, holding a combination of weapons and ritual objects that define her dual nature. Her crown and garments are masterpieces of the kalam technique, featuring microscopic buti patterns and fine cross-hatching that signify her divine luminosity against the deep, hand-dyed red background. This rich crimson hue, traditionally derived from madder root, serves as a backdrop to her piercing gaze and fierce countenance.
The Goddess is framed within an elaborate, multi-tiered temple structure, characterized by a soaring viman and a decorative toran. This architectural boundary transforms the textile into a sanctified space, housing smaller niches filled with celestial attendants and devotees. The use of traditional natural dyes reinforces the ritual purity of the cloth, creating a striking contrast with Meldi Mata’s association with the graveyard. Every part of the textile is charged with spiritual energy, from the stylized birds in the upper corners to the intricate floral fillers, making the piece a profound symbol of protection and the transformative power of the divine."
