About the Artwork +
This artwork is a profound cosmological narrative created by the visionary artist Vasant Manubhai Chittara, utilizing the sacred visual language of Mata ni Pachedi. Traditionally known as the "behind the Mother Goddess cloth," this Gujarati art form is repurposed here to create a complex mandala centered on the form of a turtle. The composition uses the turtle as a symbol of stability and the foundation of the universe, with its expansive shell serving as a celestial stage for various manifestations of the Goddess.
At the very center of the shell's mandala sits Jogani Mata, the focal point of spiritual energy. Surrounding her in a rhythmic radial pattern are other powerful forms of the Devi, including Durga Mata, Amba Mata, Khodiyar Mata, Dasha Mata, and Kumari Mata. Each deity is depicted with her characteristic attributes and accompanied by her specific vahana. The detail is meticulously rendered, showing the Goddesses associated with a crocodile, camel, sheep, peacock, goat, lion, and tiger. Notably, Jogani Mata is portrayed without a vahana, appearing in a state of primordial presence that emphasizes her role as the source of the other manifestations.
The anatomical features of the turtle are transformed into sacred symbols through the artist's disciplined use of line and block-printed aesthetics. The head of the turtle is dominated by large, radiant eyes that take the form of the sun, signifying the all-seeing light of consciousness that illuminates the cosmic order. The limbs and tail of the turtle are filled with dense, intricate patterns and miniature motifs that reflect the traditional Mata ni Pachedi style, where every inch of space is activated by narrative and decorative detail. The serene blue background acts as a cosmic ocean, highlighting the turtle as a bridge between the earthly and the divine.
The entire composition is enclosed within a repetitive, multi-panel border that echoes the central theme. Each small red panel contains a miniaturized figure of a devotee or a divine attendant, creating a rhythmic boundary that binds the vast cosmic scene. Through this masterful arrangement of iconography and form, Vasant Manubhai Chittara creates a visual hymn to the Mother Goddess, celebrating her diverse roles as the protector, creator, and ultimate foundation upon which the world rests.
