About the Artwork +

This Gond painting by Manoj Tekam presents a striking visual hybrid, merging the features of a tiger with the quills of a porcupine. In Gond tribal art from Madhya Pradesh, such chimeric figures are often used to represent the various "avatars" or spirits of the forest, suggesting that different creatures share a single, divine essence.

The composition is centered on a rounded, feline body rendered in vibrant shades of orange and golden-ochre. The tiger's face is stylized with large, almond-shaped eyes and a prominent orange snout, while its ears are small and alert. The body is built from a series of rhythmic, scalloped "fill-patterns" that simulate the texture of fur, with each scale meticulously detailed to create a sense of vibrating life.

Surrounding the central feline form is a dramatic halo of long, slender quills. These are rendered in monochrome with delicate vertical hatching, mimicking the sharp, defensive spines of a porcupine. The quills radiate outward like a solar crown, turning the animal into a powerful, totemic symbol of both strength and protection. Three signature patterns of the artist are proudly shown in the artwork - Sarson ke daane (mustard seeds), Gehu ke baal (wheat spikes), and Beni (braid). This interplay between the warm, saturated tones of the tiger and the crisp, rhythmic linework of the porcupine quills reflects the Gond belief in the fluidity of nature, where the boundaries between species are blurred by a shared spiritual energy.
