About the Artwork +
This Mata Ni Pachedi painting captures the climactic battle between Visat Mata and the arrogant demon Amarya Dait, a narrative of divine struggle and the eventual triumph of wisdom over brute strength. The textile acts as a sacred chronicle, illustrating the moment when the goddess's physical power was supplemented by the clever intervention of the divine realm. The composition is charged with movement, centered on the multifaceted form of Visat Mata as she faces a foe bolstered by a boon of immortality.
Visat Mata is depicted at the center of the crimson field, her transformation visible through the emergence of her twenty arms. Each hand grasps a weapon of war, symbolizing the sheer scale of her righteous anger and her tireless efforts to subdue the monster. Despite her celestial arsenal, the painting subtly conveys the exhaustion of a prolonged conflict, emphasizing that even divine strength meets its match in the face of an absolute boon. Her central position anchors the chaotic energy of the surrounding battle, serving as the source of order in a world troubled by the demon’s arrogance.
The secret to the battle’s resolution is found in the upper registers of the cloth, where Visat Mata's sister, Indra Pari, appears in the form of a sparrow. This avian transformation is a critical narrative element; the sparrow is shown descending toward the blue-skinned Amarya Dait to pull his choti (tuft of hair), which held the hidden secret of his immortality. This act of strategic assistance allowed Visat Mata to deliver the final, lethal blow. The two blue-skinned, horned figures flanking the goddess represent the formidable presence of the dait, their dynamic postures reflecting the intensity of the struggle before their vulnerability was exposed.
The artwork is rendered in the traditional tripartite palette of madder red, black, and white, with the red background signifying the life force and the heated theater of war. Intricate floral and geometric fillers surround the figures, representing the witness of the natural world to this cosmic event. The presence of birds and other creatures within the border and background further connects the specific myth of Visat Mata to the broader ecosystem of the Vaghari spiritual tradition. Through this detailed imagery, the painting honors the combined power of the sisters—Visat Mata’s strength and Indra Pari’s insight—in restoring balance to the universe.
