About the Artwork +
Cheriyal Scroll painting represents a significant and vibrant art tradition of Telangana, India. This visual narrative form is characteristically created on elongated painted scrolls, distinguished by its vivid colour palette and animated figures. The subject matter spans a diverse range, encompassing Hindu epics, regional folklore, and even contemporary social concerns, all executed in a readily recognizable style. This stunning Cheriyal Scroll painting by the talented Sai Kiran vividly illustrates a charming tapestry of village life, beautifully portraying the daily routines of rural women with cultural richness and warmth. Set against a vibrant red background bordered with traditional floral motifs, the scene is split into two harmonious segments that together narrate the essence of community, labor, and tradition. In the upper half, two women are engrossed in grinding grain using a traditional stone mill. Dressed in intricately patterned sarees—one in blue and the other in green—they sit outside a thatched-roof home, deeply immersed in their work. The woman in blue turns the grinder while the other adds grain, their synchronized effort symbolizing unity and the shared responsibilities of village women. A colorful rooster under a stylized tree adds a touch of liveliness and rural charm. Below, the lower section brings to life the vital task of water collection. One woman, adorned in a bright yellow-orange saree, gracefully pulls up water from a stone well using a rope and pulley, her movements reflecting strength and balance. To her right, another woman dressed in a deep brown saree carries a pot of water on her head, walking steadily toward a traditional mud home with a domed thatched roof. Her upright posture and poised expression embody grace and resilience. Together, these elements celebrate the tireless spirit of rural womanhood, rendered in the bold lines and vivid palette unique to the Cheriyal art tradition, keeping alive the stories and soul of Telangana's heritage.
