About the Artwork +

In northeastern Nagaland, the loin loom is a culturally crucial, age-old weaving method for its sixteen tribes. This "back strap loom," anchored simply by bamboo and the weaver, creates symbolically rich textiles that record personal achievements, wealth, historical feasts, and past raids. This exquisite contemporary wall hanging by Nagaloom is a refined blend of traditional Indian weaving native to Nagaland and modern Bohemian aesthetics, making it a perfect accent for any stylish, earthy interior. Woven by skilled artisans using age-old techniques, is crafted in a deep emerald green base that provides a rich canvas for the striking geometric motifs. The central design features an imaginative arrangement of directional triangles and diamond shapes aligned in a vertical spine, intersected by horizontal arrow forms—evoking a sense of movement, guidance, and balance. Delicate white and light green threads form these motifs with intricate detailing, while two playful cream tassels, extending from the sides, add an unexpected, tactile dimension that breaks the linear precision with organic charm. The composition feels both grounded and dynamic, echoing tribal symbolism and modern minimalism. The bottom is fringed with hand-knotted tassels in black and white, enhancing its handcrafted appeal. Suspended on a wooden dowel with a multicolored cord for hanging, this wall piece is easy to display and instantly transforms any space with warmth, character, and texture. This wall hanging isn’t just a decorative textile; it’s a narrative woven into fabric—speaking of heritage, sustainability, and thoughtful design. As part of Antaran’s initiative to support and revive handloom practices across rural India, this wall hanging carries with it the spirit of empowerment and artistic continuity. Whether displayed in a living room, hallway, or creative studio, it serves as a soulful celebration of handcrafted beauty in a modern world.

Ghazipur Wall Hanging

Ghazipur wall hangings are an exquisite form of textile art originating from the small city of Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh, India. However, this craft is now practiced in places like Mirzapur, Varanasi, and Chandauli with more than 3000 families engaged in this art. The characteristic features of this craft are defined by its vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and fine embroidery. Tradition and Legend The tradition of Ghazipur wall hangings dates back centuries with skilled artisans using traditional techniques passed down through generations. Initially, they were created for decorative purposes in homes, temples, and other sacred spaces, serving as both decorations and symbols of prosperity. There are also tales like there was once a skilled weaver who inspired by the natural beauty of his area began crafting textiles with subjects like Ghazipur's landscapes, traditions, and legends. Over time he got recognized for his exquisite craft and that led to the establishment of Ghazipur as a centre for textile craft. Craftsmanship Details Artisans use a variety of materials, including silk, jute, cotton, and metallic threads in multiple colors, to create elaborate motifs inspired by nature, mythology, and religious symbolism. The designs often feature elements such as flowers, birds, animals, and geometric patterns, each meticulously crafted to excellence. The process of making Ghazipur wall hangings involves several intricate steps, including bleaching, dyeing, weaving, and embroidery. Natural yarns are bleached to whiten it, then they are dyed using hot or cold water depending on the requirements. After drying them up, they are processed for weaving in pit looms. Intricate designs that cannot be woven are embroidered later with silk and jute. Overall, Ghazipur wall hangings are the amalgamation of various weaving and embroidery styles in connection with their creative and aesthetic significance.
