About the Artwork +

Originating in the early 19th century CE by the Kali Temple in Kolkata, West Bengal, Kalighat painting has maintained its popularity as a beloved Indian folk art. This captivating Kalighat painting by Bapi Chitrakar vividly brings to life the age-old traditional Indian game of Gilli Danda, featuring a young boy frozen mid-action in a dynamic pose. The artist captures the spirit of rural childhood with striking fluidity, as the boy—clad in a pastel green shirt and soft pink dhoti—swings the danda (stick) with fierce concentration, his posture exuding motion and energy. The gilli(a small tapered stick) is seen flying through the air, surrounded by scattered pieces of previous attempts, emphasizing the intensity and rhythm of the game. His curly black hair, large expressive eyes, and silver earrings radiate innocence and cultural rootedness, while his bare feet, anklets, and determined gaze ground him in the earthy, simple pleasures of a bygone era. The warm background and minimal setting keep the focus entirely on the player and his interaction with the game, a hallmark of the Kalighat style which uses bold outlines, flat colors, and stylized human forms to convey both action and emotion. Through careful attention to gesture and facial expression, Bapi Chitrakar beautifully celebrates the essence of playful resilience and tradition, reminding viewers of the joy embedded in indigenous childhood pastimes. The painting does more than just depict a game—it evokes nostalgia for a slower, more tactile world, where skill, spontaneity, and imagination shaped the games of youth. This artwork is a vibrant tribute to cultural heritage, portraying how such simple games carry profound meaning in the collective memory of Indian rural life.
