This magnificent Soof embroidery panel by Daya Ben depicts a beautifully structured "Tree of Life" motif enclosed within an ornate embroidered border, against a rich red canvas.
Soof Embroidery is a traditional counted-thread embroidery practiced by women of the Meghwal community in the Kutch region of Gujarat. It is created by counting the weave of the fabric rather than drawing patterns, resulting in precise geometric designs. The embroidery is usually worked with silk threads on handwoven cotton fabric, often without any mirrors. Soof motifs are inspired by nature, including flowers, buds and abstract forms.
In this composition, the base of the tree is built from a broad pyramid of interlocking green triangles. Branching outward horizontally from this lower trunk are stylized, geometric "arms" that end in traditional, three-pronged soof points, giving the lower half a grounded, expansive presence.
Woven vertically up the lower half of the spine is a series of stacked geometric nodes containing four reflective abhlas (circular glass mirrors). The top pair is bordered by bright magenta frameworks, while the lower four are encased in brilliant yellow and dark blue borders, adding a luminous, shimmering texture to the core of the tree.
As the tree ascends, it transitions from dense green geometry into a bursting canopy of vibrant color. The upper trunk is flanked by vertical, satin-stitch pillars of bright green and rich pink. Out of this core, intricate pink diamond-shaped medallions bloom laterally like stylized flowers, flanked by orange, yellow and blue micro-triangles. The very apex of the tree tapers into a delicate crest of indigo, orange and magenta points.
Floating just to the upper right of the tree's crest is a single, isolated geometric bird motif stitched in yellow and dark blue. The artwork is framed by a linear border featuring a zigzagging trellis pattern of yellow, orange and indigo threads, giving the piece the feel of a sacred votive panel.
The textile features the signature Soof technique, utilizing tight, multi-directional satin stitches. The absolute precision of the stitching ensures that the silk threads lie completely flat yet possess a volumetric presence. As the stitches change directions from module to module, the silk catches the ambient light like glossy ribbons, contrasting beautifully with the matte texture of the red handwoven fabric and the brilliant, hard shine of the inset glass mirrors.
Each of our artworks are hand painted by master artists across India. We provide a digital authentication certificate with this artwork signed by the artist which will be sent over email after 3-4 days of delivery of the artwork.
