About the Artwork +

This intricate artwork by Ambika Devi portrays a Kohbar, that is a painting done primarily by women a day before a marriage takes in Mithila on the very spot where the marriage rituals are conducted. a Kohbar painting is considered auspicious as it depicts many elements like Shiva and Parvati, Fishes, the circle of life, etc, that brings abundance of wealth, prosperity and fortune to the bride and groom. The painting is also drawn during the Kohbar festival to celebrate and bless all the newly wed couples. Kohbar paintings are known for their bright naturally sourced hues and colours made from various plant materials. This particular monochromatic Kohbar painting drawn with bold red strokes signifies love, passion, auspisiuosness and joy. Monochromatic Kohbars also bring out the simplicity and intricate patterns of the different elements of the stories depicted in the painting. Often in a Kohbar many elements depic various stories and beliefs of the Mithila region. This painting itself represents multiple stories and beliefs where on one side we have Shiva and Parvati signifying their divine union as husband and wife while on the other side we see an elephant symbolizing good fortune, wisdom, and prosperity. Drawing the Kohbar in simple monochromes focuses on the stories that the artist wants to tell the viewers instead of the viewers getting carries away by the vibrant colours. Ambika Devi, a celebrated Madhubani artist from Rashidpur, Bihar, began her artistic journey at age 12, continuing a centuries-old tradition. She is renowned for her mastery of 'Line Work' in Madhubani Painting, utilizing only red and black to create mesmerizing designs, though her work also extends to broader palettes and canvases. Her art has gained international recognition through events like 'Kala Sangam' and features in prominent newspapers and the CDC website during the pandemic. Ambika Devi's significant contributions to art were honored with the National Award in 2009, making her a bridge where tradition meets innovation.

Madhubani

Madhubani art, also known as Mithila art, originates from the Mithila region of Bihar, India, and is celebrated for its intricate patterns, vibrant colors, and profound cultural significance. Traditionally created by women on walls and floors during auspicious occasions, these paintings depict Hindu mythology, nature, folklore, and daily life, often incorporating Hindu deities, scenes from epics, and natural motifs like flowers and animals. Legend suggests its origins trace back to King Janak's commission for Sita's wedding. Artists traditionally use natural pigments from plants and minerals, applied with homemade bamboo and cotton brushes, filling the entire surface with fine detail. While some contemporary artists use synthetic paints, many maintain traditional methods. The art form gained international recognition in the 1960s and has since expanded to various mediums beyond walls, including canvases and textiles. Distinct styles like Kachni (line art), Bharni (filling art), Godna (tattoo art), Tantrik (spiritual), and Kohbar (marriage rituals) exist, each with unique characteristics. Madhubani art holds immense cultural, social, and religious importance, preserving stories, providing livelihood for women artists, and serving as a vibrant expression of India's rich heritage.
