Originating from the Mithila region of India, Madhubani paintings are a vibrant folk art form traditionally created by women using fingers, twigs, and matchsticks to depict nature and mythology through intricate geometric patterns. The composition is dominated by two large, ornate circular motifs, each containing a pair of fish whose bodies curve to follow the round frame, creating a sense of perpetual motion. These central circles are set against a vibrant turquoise background filled with fine, wavy blue lines that represent the movement of water.
The painting utilizes a rich and varied color palette, including bright yellows, deep reds, oranges, and greens. Each fish is intricately decorated with traditional Mithila patterns, where the bodies are filled with diverse textures such as cross-hatching, checkerboard patterns, and small colorful dots.
