About the Artwork +
In this striking Mata Ni Pachedi work, the artist captures the powerful iconography of Ugtani Meldi Maa, a goddess born of divine anger and purity. This traditional textile art from Gujarat, often referred to as a "temple behind the cloth," serves as a portable shrine for nomadic communities, documenting sacred legends through intricate hand-painted narratives.
The legend of Ugtani Meldi Maa begins with a powerful narrative of divine manifestation and the destruction of malevolence. According to sacred tradition, the Goddess Uma was once relentlessly harassed by a demon, a pursuit that eventually forced her to seek refuge within the unlikely sanctuary of a cow’s carcass. When the Goddess, embodying supreme purity, refused to physically touch the impure remains of the animal, her divine fury manifested in an extraordinary way. In anger, she rubbed her hands together, creating a formidable power from the mel or the dirt and impurity of her own skin.
From this mixture of divine essence and the blood of the vanquished demon, she emerged as the fierce and unstoppable Meldi Maa. The title Ugtani Meldi carries a deep spiritual significance, as it refers to the Goddess who rides the chariot of the rising sun. This association with the dawn symbolizes her role as a harbinger of new beginnings and the ultimate power capable of dispelling the darkness of ignorance and sin. In the current cosmic age of Kaliyug, she is revered as a Mahashakti, a potent protector who possesses the supreme authority to seek out and destroy evil wherever it hides.
In this magnificent composition by Vasant Manubhai Chittara, this story is visually documented with meticulous detail. The central character, Ugtani Mata, is portrayed in a regal half-profile, accompanied by her loyal vahana, the goat. Behind her, the textile comes alive with the traditional elements of Mata ni Pachedi, including the sun and moon, Ganesh ji and celestial fairies. The narrative also honors the human and semi-divine elements of her worship, such as the Buvaa ji, the priest who tends to her rituals, and the Maalan, who brings fresh flowers for her offerings. Sacred objects like the kalash and figures like Hanuman ji further enrich the scene.
The backdrop contains a sprawling assembly of mythical beings that highlight the vastness of her domain. These include processions for the deity, figures from the hindu pantheon such as Hanumana, as well as other mythological and mythical figures such as the half-man-half-fish and the half-man-half-horse, populating the space behind the main deity. Every element of the legend and the painting serves to reinforce Meldi Maa’s identity as a goddess born from the very skin of divinity to serve as a shield for the faithful. Through this detailed iconography, the story of her origin and her journey on the chariot of the rising sun remains a timeless tribute to her enduring strength and protective grace.
