About the Artwork +
This striking Sohrai painting by Rukmani Devi captures a fascinating and symbolically rich narrative featuring a cow and a snake. Sohrai is an ancient indigenous art form practiced by tribal communities primarily in the Hazaribagh region of Jharkhand. Traditionally painted by women on the mud walls of their homes to celebrate the harvest festival and honor cattle, it is a highly ritualistic art tradition that honors the deep interconnectedness of nature, wildlife, and domestic animals. In local folklore and agrarian mythology, the image of a snake drinking milk directly from a cow’s udder represents a sacred bond of non-violence, mutual coexistence, and the ultimate benevolence of the mother cow, who provides nourishment to all creatures of the earth, both domestic and wild.
The composition is rendered in the signature Sohrai aesthetic, defined by bold black outlines and a restricted palette of earthy, natural pigments including ochre-yellow, rust-red, and deep charcoal black against a stark white background. The central figure of the horned cow dominates the canvas, portrayed with an abstract, blocky anatomy covered in alternating vertical stripes of red and yellow, punctuated by delicate white dots. Her face is turned forward towards the viewer with large, wide, concentric circular eyes that give her a soulful, hypnotic presence, while her long curved horns sweep upward. Positioned beneath her underbelly, a thick, patterned snake curves gracefully down from behind her back, its body decorated with matching striped motifs, as its head directly interfaces with the cow’s udder to drink her milk in a moment of calm harmony.
The negative space surrounding the central figures is densely adorned with stylized, organic flora characteristic of tribal wall art. Multiple leafy branches and sprigs sprout around the cow, filled with pointed, tri-colored leaves painted in alternating shades of rust-red, ochre, and white. These botanical elements frame the animals and ground them within a fertile, wild landscape. The deliberate lack of realistic perspective and the emphasis on graphic, flat patterns give the entire scene a powerful primal energy, elevating a simple folk narrative into a timeless visual icon of natural synergy.
The entire scene is framed by a decorative scalloped or undulating border that runs along the visible edges of the canvas. This border consists of repeating semi-circular patterns rendered in a deep earthy red and outlined in black, mimicking traditional clay wall reliefs. This rustic frame neatly encloses the high-contrast interior, providing a cohesive finish that respects the ancient, mural-derived origins of the Sohrai painting style.
