About the Artwork +
This vibrant Gond painting by Saroj Venkat Shyam depicts Bada Dev, the principal deity of the Gond tribe, as the central figure. The deity's body is intricately detailed with horizontal stripes of red and brown, and is crowned with blue and red horns. Bada Dev's form cleverly integrates with the "tree of life," a prominent symbol in Gond art, with his head and torso forming the trunk.
Surrounding the deity are various elements of worship and nature. A large, stylized pot, likely holding a religious offering or bhog, rests at the bottom right, filled with freshly cooked Dal and Rice. Another smaller offering is served in a mug consisting of the Mahua nectar, a significant offering. Below the deity's head, two birds with blue, orange, and yellow plumage are positioned as if offering reverence.
In the upper half of the painting, two birds, also forming part of the tree, extend their bodies into branches with lush green leaves. These birds appear to be attracting two other smaller birds, painted in a similar blue and orange palette, towards the branches, symbolizing the interconnectedness of all life.
The artist, Saroj Venkat Shyam, has masterfully woven together the themes of devotion, nature, and the Gond cosmology, showing Bada Dev not just as a deity, but as the very essence of the life-giving tree, nourished and revered by the creatures of the forest. The painting's rich colors and intricate patterns are characteristic of the Gond art form.
