About the Artwork +

This captivating Gond painting by artist Sukhiram Maravi depicts a group of trees with thick, patterned trunks standing on a small piece of land surrounded by water. These three trees are the Sal, Gullar and Bamboo trees, which are worshipped as a form of feminine energy or Shakti by the Gond tribe, in the form of a girl child.

The artwork is a fine example of the Gond tribal art form from Madhya Pradesh, which uses intricate patterns and a vibrant color palette to bring subjects from the natural world to life. The central feature is a cluster of trees, with a prominent, curved one in the foreground. The tree trunks are a complex mosaic of warm brown and orange tones, and they are filled with a pattern of horizontal stripes and geometric designs. The leaves of the trees are rendered in a vibrant green and are also filled with detailed patterns. The trees are rooted in a small mound of land that is surrounded by a body of water. The water is depicted with a flowing pattern of light blue lines and dots, creating a sense of movement. The land is a mix of earthy tones and patterns, providing a solid base for the trees.

This painting beautifully showcases Sukhiram Maravi's distinct artistic style, featuring his signature Datari pattern—a continuous top line enclosing small vertical strokes, finished with a row of dots. Drawing inspiration from nature and the rich narratives of tribal life, Maravi skillfully blends historical and contemporary perspectives. This masterful work honors the natural world and offers a unique insight into the social customs, rituals, and beliefs of the Gond tradition through its detailed and symbolic visual language.
