About the Artwork +
This enchanting Gond painting by Venkat Shyam celebrates the Mahua tree, a sacred and life-sustaining symbol in the lives of India’s Adivasi communities. Rendered with luminous precision against a gradient teal-blue background, the painting captures a vibrant ecosystem revolving around the tree's bounty.
The majestic Mahua tree stands tall and wide, its trunk adorned in soft bands of white, orange, lavender, and ochre, winding upwards like sacred threads binding it to the sky. The tree bursts forth with stylized mahua blossoms, painted in radiant hues of orange, yellow, and white, their petals glowing like flames of life and continuity. Interwoven among the branches are tribal figures—men and women—engaged in climbing, conversing, and embracing the tree, echoing its role as both a spiritual and practical cornerstone of their lives.
Below, women diligently collect the fallen mahua flowers, which are vital for food, medicine, and local brews. Two large pots with wooden mashers stand in the foreground, suggesting the brewing process—a cultural ritual imbued with seasonal rhythm and community bonding. The scattered mahua drops, floating gently toward baskets, animate the scene with movement and abundance. The use of fine dots (Venkat Shyam seeks inspiration from the dot symbolising the Supreme God) and linear textures, a hallmark of Gond art, imbues the scene with a rhythmic pulse. More than a botanical illustration, this painting is a reverent ode to the Mahua as mother, sustainer, and spiritual guardian—a living entity deeply woven into the tribal soul. Venkat Shyam transforms folklore into a living canvas, embodying ecological respect and ancestral wisdom.
