About the Artwork +
Artist Venkat Shyam paints a captivating depiction of a fish eye in this vivid Gond painting, blending mythology with visual symbolism. Originating in the tribal Gond community, which lives in close communion with nature, these paintings portray a strong belief that every aspect of nature is animate and sacred.
The bold black form of the fish, with its striking white eye, framed by a flowing wave of multicoloured fish, captures the attention of the viewer. The blue layers surrounding the central figure depict the fluidity and mystery of aquatic life. In Gond tradition, the fish eye is revered as a symbol of wisdom, vigilance, and divine presence, portraying it as an all-seeing force that watches over the natural world.
The interlinked fish along the wave further represent unity, abundance, and the sacred rhythm of life in water, a life cycle needed for existence. The master artist effortlessly incorporates the use of his signature patterns like, 'lahrdaar' or choppy waves, adding dynamic movement and depth within the majestic fish and the chain of the smaller fishes can be seen along with the half concentric circles placed along with dots, symbolising his village and community, and the half moon with the dots, symbolising the supreme god.
This composition, with its traditional patterns and spiritual meaning, reflects the Gond belief in nature’s connection with human life, making the painting not just a means for aesthetic pleasure but also exudes a quiet sense of protection and reverence.
