About the Artwork +

This striking Gond painting by Venkat Shyam captures the powerful yet whimsical essence of a tiger, portrayed with the distinctive narrative symbolism and meticulous patterning characteristic of the Gond art tradition. Set against a bold, radiant red backdrop, the tiger lies in a curled, almost meditative pose, exuding both tranquility and latent strength. Its face, painted in a vibrant blue and textured with fine arch-like motifs, symbolic of the artist's signature pattern of half concentric circles, a representation of his community and village, immediately draws the viewer’s gaze with its large, expressive eyes that reflect both awareness and mystique.

The body, adorned with an intricate scale-like pattern in earthy ochre tones, spirals into a captivating form that suggests motion even in stillness. Adding a poetic dimension to the scene, a colorful bird rests peacefully on the tiger’s back—its green and yellow feathers contrasting beautifully with the feline’s coat—symbolizing harmony between predator and prey, a recurring theme in tribal storytelling. The tiger’s tail, rendered in elaborate bands of grey, yellow, and blue, curls in a rhythmic swirl, reinforcing the painting’s sense of dynamic balance. Every inch of the canvas is filled with meticulously drawn details—tiny dots (a source of inspiration for the artist), repetitive lines, and textured motifs—that together create a visual symphony echoing the rhythms of nature. Venkat Shyam masterfully blends realism with fantasy, imbuing the tiger not just with physical presence but with a soul rooted in folklore and spirit. This painting stands as a vivid testament to the Gond belief in the interconnectedness of all life, and the sacredness that pulses through even the most feared of creatures.

    Venkat
Venkat Raman Singh Shyam, a visionary artist from the Gond community, has crafted a unique artistic language that is deeply rooted in his heritage and spirituality. In his art, he finds inspiration in the Bindu, a symbol representing the supreme god, and the half-moon that surrounds it, symbolizing his village and community. These elements form the foundation of his distinctive style, a style that he believes shares common threads with the works of renowned artists like Dali and Picasso. Venkat's artistic journey began at the tender age of ten when he began etching the world around him onto the walls of his home and whatever scraps of newspaper he could find. Born into a Gond Pardhan family in Madhya Pradesh's Sejohra village, he has dedicated the past four decades to the world of art. Under the tutelage of his late uncle, the esteemed Gond artist Jangarh Singh Shyam, Venkat learned to forge his own artistic path. His art beautifully weaves together the rich tapestry of his clan's historical legends with contemporary perspectives of the world. Venkat's work is a testament to the fluidity of tradition and the evolving narratives that connect the past with the present. As he aptly puts it, "Change is the ultimate rule of nature and the universe." While deeply rooted in tradition and mythology, his art constantly adapts to resonate with diverse audiences, bridging the gap between ancient stories and contemporary interpretations.
