About the Artwork +
This intricate Pattachitra painting on canvas, created by the National Award-winning artist Apindra Swain, is a masterful narrative piece that blends the birth of Lord Ganesha with the cosmic order of Lord Vishnu’s incarnations. Pattachitra is a traditional cloth-based scroll painting from Odisha, known for its complex horizontal and vertical layouts and its use of natural mineral pigments. The artwork is organized into a series of nested rectangular frames, with the central focus reserved for the fully realized form of the elephant-headed deity.
At the heart of the composition, Lord Ganesha is depicted seated on a lotus throne, flanked by his consorts Riddhi and Siddhi, who represent prosperity and spiritual power. The broad boundary panels tell the detailed story of Ganesha’s birth in a sequential, circular narrative. This cycle begins with the sacred marriage of Shiva and Parvati, followed by Parvati creating a young Ganesha from the turmeric paste of her own body. The narrative tension peaks with the battle between Ganesha and Shiva, culminating in the dramatic moment where Shiva, in his wrath, severs the boy's head. The story concludes in the inner rectangular panels surrounding the center, where an elephant’s head is attached to the body and Ganesha is revived, officially becoming the commander of Shiva’s forces.
Framing this central story is a series of circular medallions depicting the Dashavatara, or the ten primary incarnations of Lord Vishnu, which symbolize the preservation of cosmic balance. These include Matsya (the fish), Kurma (the tortoise), Varaha (the boar), Narasimha (the half-man/half-lion), Vamana (the dwarf, the warrior incarnations Parashurama, Rama and Balarama, the enlightened Buddha and the future savior Kalki, depicted on a white horse.
Between these major icons, the artist has included rows of Mooshikas (Ganesha’s mouse mount) in various poses, further emphasizing the playful and devotional nature of the work. Apindra Swain’s mastery is evident in the dense art style, where every inch of the canvas is filled with floral vines, geometric borders, and rhythmic patterns that bring this epic Hindu mythology to life.
