About the Artwork +

In this Pattachitra, Mata Sita's unwavering devotion and chastity are highlighted. After undergoing numerous trials to prove her purity, she was finally free from skeptical scrutiny following the grand Ashwamedha Yagna. When questioned, she invoked Agnee Dev in the form of yagna to vouch for her chastity. In a powerful moment depicted in this painting, she voluntarily sits on the Yagna agnee, reaffirming her divinity and reminding all creatures of her true nature. She is portrayed as embodying the forms of Devi, including Lakshmi, Saraswati, and Durga. This Pattachitra captures the essence of Mata Sita's strength and divine power.

Gitanjali Das blue-tick

Gitanjali
Geetanjali Das, a highly acclaimed National Award-winning Pattachitra artist, hails from Dandasahi village, Puri, Odisha, and currently resides in Pragati Bhawan, Balagandi, Puri. Her artistic journey began at the young age of ten, when she started learning Pattachitra, a traditional painting style deeply rooted in the Temple Tradition of Odisha. Trained under the late National Award winner, Guru Shri Arjun Maharana, Geetanjali not only mastered Pattachitra but also extended her artistry to traditional materials like tassar silk. As a dedicated individual artist, she personally committed to promoting the art form. Her notable achievements include participating in the Janapada Indigenous Art Workshop Series 02 and 03 hosted by Bhaasa Gallery and Studio and Bhavana Foundation (R) in Havanje. Her work has also earned recognition, being featured in Asian Art London and covered extensively in articles, including the Deccan Herald, across Odisha and other states. Geetanjali traces her artistic lineage through her family, believing she inherited the Pattachitra style from her renowned paternal grandfather, Braj Krishan Pradhan. She views her art as a devotional service, or Seva, a holy endeavour to spread the spiritual and traditional values of the sacred land of Jagannath and India. A fiercely dedicated artist, Geetanjali continuously advocates for the survival of the art form, emphasising that "art will only survive if artists are supported" and its true value is realized through preservation and display. Following the passing of her husband due to COVID-19, she has dedicated herself to fulfilling his dream: a mission to restore the temple artistic tradition, preserve the Jagannath culture, and ensure their artistic creations endure for centuries to come.
