This grand Pichwai painting by master artist Naveen Soni depicts the festival of Govardhan Puja, integrated with a comprehensive border framing twenty-four distinct swaroops of Shrinathji. Pichwai is a traditional devotional textile painting art form from Nathdwara, Rajasthan, historically created as sacred backdrops for the shrine of Shrinathji to celebrate seasonal festivals, ritual shringars and sacred leelas within the Pushtimarg tradition.
At the center of the composition stands Shrinathji, rendered in a dark complexion and iconic posture with his left arm raised to lift Mount Govardhan. He is adorned in an elaborate festive vastra decorated with gold embroidery, wearing heavy pearl necklaces, a prominent lotus garland and a decorative peacock-feather mukut. His right hand holds a kamal chadi and flute, while offerings of jal dani, paan beeda and prasad dibbi lie by his feet. Flanking the deity are gopis in vibrant ghagra cholis and dupattas presenting lotus offerings and waving decorative fans. Behind the shrine architecture, lush banana trees and dense tree canopies frame the central sanctuary.
Below the shrine, a narrative lower scene depicts the Govardhan Puja rituals. Govardhan Puja celebrates Lord Krishna convincing the people of Vrindavan to worship Mount Govardhan, the hill that sustained their cattle and livelihoods, instead of King Indra. Enraged by the lost offerings, Indra unleashed torrential storms to flood the region. To protect the villagers and their herds, seven-year-old Krishna lifted Mount Govardhan on his little finger, holding it aloft for seven days as a massive shield until Indra conceded defeat and acknowledged Krishna's divinity. The celebrations involve annakut (mountain of grains) and chappan bhog - food offerings made by the villagers. To the right is daan lila, depicting Krishna, accompanied by Balarama, negotiating with the gopis for butter. The yellow panel below depicts decorated white cows and a lotus-filled Yamuna river running along the bottom. The saffron handprints on the cows' bodies symbolise the presence of Krishna
Enclosing the central composition is a outer border featuring twenty-four individual architectural shrines. Each shrine houses a unique swaroop of Shrinathji, illustrating the various daily dressings (shringars) and seasonal festival darshans celebrated in the Pushtimarg devotional calendar. The combination of the central Govardhan Puja episode with the detailed border of twenty-four swaroops highlights both the narrative and ritualistic dimensions of Nathdwara art.
Each of our artworks are hand painted by master artists across India. We provide a digital authentication certificate with this artwork signed by the artist which will be sent over email after 3-4 days of delivery of the artwork.

Returns and Replacements
