This painting, named "Dechenling" in Himalayan Contemporary Art by Dikki C. Lepcha of Tsal Studio, takes its name from Gangtok's cremation ground, a place so embedded in everyday Himalayan Buddhist language that its name has become a casual metaphor for death and impermanence. Painted in earth pigments bound with natural binders on stretched canvas, the work draws on the charnel-ground imagery long used in Vajrayana Buddhist practice as a direct meditation on mortality.
Rooted in shared Himalayan heritage yet shaped by distinct creative voices, this work draws deeply from Buddhist motifs, symbols, and narrative traditions, reinterpreting them through a contemporary visual language that is unmistakably its own, offering a fresh, living continuation of Himalayan artistic heritage rather than a fixed revival of its past forms.
At the centre of the composition, two skeletal figures are caught mid-dance, their bones rendered in fine anatomical detail and draped with garlands of small red and green flowers around their necks. One figure raises an arm skyward holding a slender skeleton staff, while the other extends a hand outward holding a sprig of leaves; both stand balanced on one leg in a posture of playful, suspended motion. The pair are set against a warm, mottled brown ground scattered with small blossoms in pink, yellow, teal, green and lavender, arranged in a loose diagonal grid across the entire canvas.
The soft, earthy palette of the background contrasts with the crisp white and red detailing of the skeletal figures, giving the composition a tone of celebration rather than dread.
Each of our artworks are hand painted by master artists across India. We provide a digital authentication certificate with this artwork signed by the artist which will be sent over email after 3-4 days of delivery of the artwork.
