About the Artwork +
This elaborate Srikalahasti Kalamkari textile by Ghanshyam Sarode depicts a pivotal moment from the Ramayana: the Sita Swayamvar. Hand-painted on hand-processed cotton using a traditional kalam (bamboo pen) and natural dyes, the artwork is organized into a detailed narrative grid that captures the divine grandeur of the celestial marriage.
The composition is anchored by a large central sanctum that focuses on the protagonists. Within this space, Lord Rama is portrayed as the successful suitor, holding the shattered Shiva Dhanush (Shiva’s bow), while Sita stands opposite him, holding the varamala (nuptial garland) that she will soon place around his neck. Besides them, the sage Vishwamitra presides as a witness, and Sita’s father, King Janaka, looks on with immense joy.
Surrounding this central union are various panels of observing deities and courtiers, adding complexity to the narrative. In the top-left, Lord Ganesha is shown, being invoked as the God of auspicious beginnings. He is joined by numerous kings and princes from other kingdoms who had traveled for the swayamvar, all rendered with the fine linework characteristic of the Srikalahasti style. The palette is strictly traditional, featuring warm madder reds, soft ochres, and the deep, rich blues of indigo against the natural cream background.
The lower register depicts a rhythmic procession of musicians playing traditional instruments like the shehnai, symbolizing the celebratory atmosphere. An extensive border of alternating grey and gold floral leaves frames the entire cosmic scene, acting as a spiritual boundary. Through this work, Ghanshyam Sarode preserves the storytelling depth of traditional Kalamkari, creating a visually stunning, living shrine of the divine couple’s union.
