About the Artwork +

Hailing from Telangana, India, Cheriyal Scroll painting is a lively and fascinating tradition of visual storytelling. These long, painted scrolls come alive with bright colours and energetic characters, depicting narratives ranging from Hindu epics and local legends to reflections on current social themes, all within a unique artistic framework. This captivating Cheriyal Scroll painting by Sai Kiran offers a vivid and heartfelt portrayal of rural agricultural life, centered around the rhythmic labor of men and women displaying the harmony between people and nature. Set against a warm, earthy backdrop, the painting is divided into two planes that bring together the activities of sowing, harvesting, and foraging, encapsulating the seasonal essence of a village paddy field. In the foreground, two women in traditional sarees—one in blue and the other in a red and yellow combination—are seen engaged in sowing seeds by hand. Their bent postures, adorned with jewelry and marked by expressive faces, reflect dedication, patience, and an intimate connection to the soil. Their rhythmic motion and focused expressions give life to the fertile land beneath them, depicted with rows of green paddy shoots and white strokes indicating sprouting or water. Nearby, a third woman, clad in an orange saree, is shown harvesting mature crops with a sickle in hand, carefully bundling the grain. Her movement adds a dynamic energy to the composition. At the top of the frame, a male figure carries a large bundle of cut grass on his head—possibly the harvest for sale—walking across a hilly green field, providing balance and reinforcing the collaborative spirit of rural labor. The bold outlines, flat perspective, and vibrant palette—hallmarks of the Cheriyal style—infuse this pastoral scene with timeless charm and cultural richness, celebrating the beauty, dignity, and interdependence of village life and agricultural tradition in Telangana.

Sai Kiran Dhanalakota blue-tick

Sai
Sai Kiran, a 33-year-old artist, is credited with carrying on the history of the Dhanalakota family, the last practising family for Cheriyal Scroll painting. A 160-year-old Cheriyal scroll painted by his great-great grandpa is also on display in a museum in Paris, providing insight into his family's past. With the market for Cheriyal scrolls decreasing, his parents advised him to study rather than pursue painting, but Sai Kiran obtained a degree in fine arts to acquire new art techniques to modernise and make his work relevant in today's times. He wishes the Cheriyal scroll painters knew more about the stories they are painting, because the storytellers for these paintings are autonomous and add their own colour to the stories, but he makes an attempt to study these stories, and his personal favourite is Gaurapuranama's, about Toddy Tappers (Wine tappers). 'We replace our phones every year, our phone covers every two months, change is such a constant, therefore our work needs to stay up with it and adapt,' Sai Kiran says.
