About Telangana's Arts and Paintings

Telangana, a land of rich cultural heritage and artistic brilliance, is known for its diverse arts and crafts that showcase the state's vibrant traditions.

Bidriware

Bidriware is believed to have originated in Bidar, Karnataka, and was later adopted in Telangana. It dates back to the 14th century during the rule of the Bahmani Sultans.

The craft uses a blackened alloy of zinc and copper, inlaid with thin sheets of pure silver. The designs often include floral motifs, geometric patterns, and human and animal figures. Bidriware is highly prized for its unique appearance and intricate craftsmanship. It is often used for making decorative items and jewelry.

Nirmal Paintings

These paintings originate from the Nirmal town in the Adilabad district. The tradition dates back to the 14th century when artisans from the Mughal era settled in the region.

Nirmal paintings are created on a specially treated wood or canvas using natural dyes and colors. The themes often include scenes from Hindu mythology, floral designs, and Mughal miniatures.

Nirmal paintings are valued for their detailed craftsmanship and vibrant colors. They are used to decorate homes and temples.

Dokra Metal Craft

Dokra or Dhokra is a form of ancient bell metal craft that has been practiced by the tribal communities of Telangana for over 4,000 years.

The craft involves the use of non-ferrous metal, typically brass, using the lost-wax casting technique. The themes often include tribal deities, animals, and everyday scenes from rural life.

Dokra metal craft is celebrated for its rustic charm and unique aesthetic. Each piece is distinct, reflecting the artisan's creativity and skill.

Cheriyal Scroll Paintings

Cheriyal scroll paintings originate from the Cheriyal village in the Warangal district. This traditional art form dates back to over 400 years. The scrolls are made on khadi cloth coated with a mixture of tamarind seed paste and white clay, and the paintings are created using natural colors.

The scrolls often depict stories from Indian mythology, folklore, and rural life. Cheriyal scroll paintings are integral to the local storytelling tradition and are used during festivals and cultural events.

Telangana's arts and crafts reflect the state's rich history and artistic prowess. The master artists and craftsmen have dedicated themselves to preserving and promoting these traditional art forms, ensuring that Telangana's cultural legacy continues to thrive and inspire generations to come.
