Uttam Chitrakar portrays the awe-inspiring presence of Goddess Durga in her grand and formidable avatar. At the centre of the composition, Goddess Durga stands in all her resplendent glory, radiating strength and valor. Her majestic form is adorned with ten powerful arms, each holding a fearsome weapon, symbolising her ability to protect her devotees from all directions. Beside her stands her vahana, the fearsome lion, representing dharma and righteousness. The lion's presence underscores her status as the embodiment of justice and moral order. Goddess Durga is shown wielding her trident, which she uses to vanquish the demon Mahisasur. This triumphant act symbolises the victory of good over evil, a recurring theme in Hindu mythology. This painting serves as a powerful homage to Goddess Durga and her pivotal role in Hindu tradition, where she represents the eternal struggle between righteousness and malevolence.

Kalighat painting is a traditional Indian art form that originated in the 19th century near the Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata. It is known for its bold lines, vibrant colors, and minimal backgrounds, influencing artists like Jamini Roy. Initially devotional souvenirs for pilgrims, the themes expanded to include social satires, depicting figures like Goddess Kali, Babu & Bibi, and Cat with the Fish. Artists, known as 'patuas,' used natural pigments on paper or cloth, sometimes incorporating European realism for British patrons. Although it declined with the rise of machine prints, recent efforts by artists, government, and connoisseurs are reviving this culturally and historically significant art form through exhibitions and workshops.
