Banjara embroidery is a traditional craft of the nomadic Banjara community, a tribe that is found in various states across India. The craft is known for its use of colorful threads, patchwork, and embellishments.
This artwork by artist Sapavat Siddu is a detailed and beautiful example of Banjara embroidery. The piece is a square-shaped textile with a vibrant color palette of deep pinks, oranges, greens, and purples. The central section is a grid of sixteen smaller squares, each featuring a unique geometric design. The central square has a cross-like pattern, while the surrounding squares contain solid colors and intricate geometric shapes. The piece is framed by a series of concentric borders. The inner border is a thin line of embroidered zig-zag patterns, followed by a wide band of rich orange color.
The outermost border is a thick frame of multi-color woven lines, with repeating geometric motifs. The embroidery itself has a rustic, tactile quality, with the threads creating a raised, textured surface. This piece beautifully showcases the Banjara's mastery of color and geometric patterns, creating a vibrant and lively composition.
