Banjara embroidery, also known as Lambani embroidery, is a traditional craft of the nomadic Banjara community, a tribe that is found in various states across India. The craft is most prominent in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan.
This artwork by artist Sapavat Siddhu is a detailed and beautiful example of Banjara embroidery. The piece is a rectangular textile with a vibrant color palette of deep pinks, purples, and yellows. The central section is a grid of four main panels, each featuring a unique geometric design, with two smaller panels positioned between them. The top two panels are distinct: the left panel has a purple, stylized eight-pointed star at its center, surrounded by triangles and squares of vibrant yellow and deep pink. The right panel is divided into multiple triangles, with triangles in deep, rich purple, bright yellow, pink, and blue. The bottom two panels mirror the top two in their geometric composition but use different colors.
The bottom left panel is divided into triangles of pink and purple, while the bottom right panel contains a star motif, similar to the top left, but rendered in shades of purple and orange-yellow. The entire piece is framed by thick, textured bands of solid colors. The main border is a rich pink, while the inner bands are a mix of pink, yellow, and purple. A thin line of black thread outlines each panel, creating a bold, graphic effect.
The embroidery itself has a rustic, tactile quality, with the threads creating a raised, textured surface. The raw threaded edges on the top and bottom add to the folk art aesthetic. This piece beautifully showcases the Banjara's mastery of color and geometric patterns, creating a vibrant and lively composition.
