Banjara embroidery is a traditional craft of the nomadic Banjara community, a tribe that is found in various states across India. The craft is known for its use of colorful threads, patchwork, and embellishments.
This artwork by Sapavat Siddu is a detailed and beautiful example of Banjara embroidery. The piece is a square-shaped textile with a central grid of four main panels, each featuring a unique geometric design. The color palette is dominated by rich reds, greens, whites, blues, and browns, with bright multi-colored accents. The central panels are divided into smaller squares and triangles, with a mix of solid colors and intricate checkerboard-like patterns. The entire central section is framed by a series of concentric borders. The inner borders are in brown and beige colors, while the outer borders are made of a rich red and a series of smaller, colorful vertical stripes.
A white braided cross-like motif in the center holds the four main panels together. The rustic, tactile quality of the threads creates an illusionistic pattern, giving the piece a rich dynamism and depth.
